Listen up, millennials: green is the new grey

Listen up, millennials: green is the new grey

Millennial grey was a major trend that divided designers for a decade. Now, a new colour is ruling the roost in this generation's homes.

If you're ready to introduce a fresh colour scheme, make way for sage green in your bedroom and living spaces. Discover how to incorporate this gentle green shade in your own interiors and kiss goodbye to the dull greys.

What is millennial grey?

Millennial grey was the backlash to 'Boomer beige' and the busy 90s aesthetic. This steely tone was embraced by millennials from the 2010s onwards, and we saw monochromatic greys on walls, floors and furnishings with minimal décor.

It appeared the grey was here to stay. However, back in 2022, when influencer Mrs Hinch, aka Sophie Hinchcliffe, announced she had abandoned millennial grey in her home, the reaction was instant. Home stores quickly removed the cooler colour from their shelves, and the way was paved for something new.

And now, we have just the antidote…

Say hello to millennial green

There has been a collective shift to sage, heralded as 'millennial green'. Warmer and softer than its predecessor, this generation-defining interiors trend has a wonderfully uplifting link with nature.

Sage is calm and contemporary, while playing into the focus for many of this generation, including sustainability and mindfulness. It also allows for the cosiness of current interior trends, from rustic farmhouse to the earthy neutrals that we're seeing in 2025 – all without being overwhelming.

It's a soothing balance to the vibrant pistachio green and vivid mint that are also trending right now, creating a calming trifecta of beautiful green tones.

How to introduce sage green

Ready to add this gorgeous millennial green to your home? Here are some tips to help you tap into this trend:

·        Furniture

Sage green is a trending shade for sofas and upholstered chairs right now, and it works well on these larger pieces in living rooms and anterooms. You might also want to add a burst of this green in your painted pieces. For instance, a millennial green fitted wardrobe has a real impact.

·        Walls

This is a rich neutral that lends itself nicely to walls. You could pick it out for your living room or add a splash of millennial green to a bedroom or playroom for a cosy, calming effect.

·        Accents

Experiment with small touches. This could be curtains, a rug, an armchair, pillows and throws or painted cupboards. It's especially effective against monochrome designs or in rooms where there are cooler neutrals, such as off-white walls. You may find that different accents in this colour placed in rooms throughout your home create cohesion in your design.

·        More colour

For something different, add pops of a stronger shade that tones with sage green, such as mustard yellow, to avoid interiors looking drab and to create a vibrant contrast.
