Self-care week without spending money

This year’s Self-Care Week kicked off on the 18th November, and it’s all about looking after your mind and body in order to live better. With the busy Christmas season fast approaching, we’re exploring how to include smaller acts of self-care into our daily routines… for free!

If you begin your day with a coffee or a cuppa, the caffeine may actually be making you feel sleepier later in the day. This is because your body naturally produces cortisol in the morning, and this hormone is heightened by caffeine—which is great for boosting your alertness temporarily… but can cause you to crash mid-afternoon. Making the switch to decaf, even if just for your first drink of the day, can give your body time to properly wake up. Think of it as self-care for the 3pm version of you!

While you’re making small tweaks to your morning routine, getting out of bed without reaching for your phone can be an amazing boost for your wellbeing. Saving your morning scroll for when you’re already up means you’re slowly transitioning into your day, without any notifications or emails to jolt you awake.

Delaying when you reach for your phone also means that you’re not bombarded with news and updates, which may then negatively impact your mood for the day. As you’ll have some time between waking up and scrolling, grab the opportunity to explore how affirmations work for you. This can be an effective way to set up your mood for the day, especially if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed!

Finally, one of our favourite acts of self-care is having a good old declutter. A tidy home is a tidy mind: clearing through items you don’t use or want anymore can be freeing. Wth Christmas on the horizon, it’s also a great way to donate or gift any unused or unwanted possessions.
