Sustainable Christmas decorating ideas

Decking out the home for Christmas doesn't have to impact the planet. Today, there are so many ways to decorate sustainably – and they don't cost the earth.

If you'd like to be a little more environmentally conscious this year, there are numerous decorating ideas that provide the same festive spirit without the waste.

In this article, we'll be discussing how you can do your bit for the planet with our eco-friendly Christmas decoration ideas.

Make your own wreath

Making your own wreath is a fun and rewarding activity that the whole family can get involved in. It's much more cost-effective than buying a pre-made wreath and is a great way to get creative.

Designing and creating your own wreath is simple. You have everything you need right on your doorstep – all you have to do is go scavenging in the garden to find all the natural elements required! Group the kids together and search for foliage, branches and flowers to make a unique wreath that's personal to your family.

Use natural materials

Why not deck out the home with handmade decorations or upcycled materials? You can make your own Christmas ornaments by using any spare wood or logs that you may have. Wood is incredibly durable and robust, meaning your decorations can be used for years to come.

Find pinecones and branches from the garden and display these on your wooden fitted furniture to dress it up for the festivities. Each bespoke storage solution from Hammonds is handcrafted to your requirements, using materials that have little impact on the environment. We aim to reduce our waste where possible and use the majority of our wood offcuts to heat our factories.

It's the little things that can help make the big changes. We are taking the steps required to give back to our planet – eco-friendly Christmas decorations could be the start of you doing the same!

Decorate with dried fruits

Drying out fruit is so easy and will add a gorgeous Christmas scent to your home. You'll be adding a pop of festive colour and spending less on your décor by utilising your old fruits that may have otherwise gone straight in the bin.

Simply grab your fruit of choice – whether that be oranges, lemons or berries – and dry them out in the oven. Slice your fruit into thin strips, arrange them on a rack or oven tray and pop them in for several hours. The total drying time typically takes between four to eight hours depending on the size and water content of your fruit.

For extra sustainability points, you can dry your fruits out in an air fryer. Some come with a dehydration function, or you can place them in on your normal setting for around an hour at a low temperature.

Make paper tree decorations

Bring out the arts and crafts and make sustainable Christmas tree decorations out of paper. Find scrap paper or old newspapers to create distinctive decorations you can hang on the tree.

What you create is completely down to you. Choose origami stars, paper angels or candy canes and simply poke a hole and thread some string through to form hanging decorations that you can keep forever. Why not make it a tradition and write the year on each creation so you can look back each year?

Use cinnamon sticks

Nothing says festive like the strong smell of cinnamon. Whether you hang cinnamon sticks from the tree or display them around your home, the gorgeous scent will linger all season.

To make them look even more appealing, tie an elegant red ribbon around the sticks and create a beautiful bow. It's as easy as that!
