Hallway storage ideas: shoe & coat storage

Hallway storage ideas: shoe & coat storage

Your hallway is a space you probably pass through every day. It’s the pathway between the inside and the outside of your house, and for this reason, it could often end up a dumping ground for bags, shoes and coats.

There are, however, solutions for making your hallway work harder and look more welcoming. Here we explore stylish hallway coat and shoe storage ideas to keep the clutter at bay and your entrance looking fabulous.

Make use of space underneath stairs

Often your staircase will be situated close to your hallway area. Therefore, dead space underneath a staircase can be used as precious storage space for outdoor gear.

Depending on the height and depth of your under-stairs area, you could install a concealed fitted wardrobe to fill up the entirety of the space, creating hallway coat storage. This means that your jackets, bags, shoes and wellies can be housed out of site but be close enough to the door when you need to go back outside again.

If you have children, this is also a perfect space to keep backpacks and PE bags until the next day, including any sports gear needed in the evenings or weekends.

Create a boot room

If you don’t have under-stairs space available, or prefer something less concealed, then fitted boot room cabinets can be installed perfectly into hallway alcoves. Working better in wider hallway spaces, boot room cabinets can feature open shelves or have doors or a mix of both. They are perfect for storing things away neatly and are sure to be the most-used pieces of furniture in your house!

As well as being a great shoe storage idea, other items such as dog leads, cat food, firewood and electrical equipment are all commonly stored in a hallway boot cabinet, too. This helps to minimise chaos and clutter forming elsewhere in the house.

Add hanging space

Wall space is usually plentiful in a hallway area, so if you are struggling for floorspace to fit cabinets and wardrobes, just look up!

Hooks, pegs and rails provide simple storage solutions for coats, scarves, umbrellas and bags when guests arrive or when your family members return home. They can be placed behind doors, on the walls beside doors and along the hallway walls themselves.

Choose from a plentiful range of coat hooks and pegs – some of which come with handy shelving to place hats, plants or welcoming candles.

Put up shelving

Adding further shelving close to hooks and pegs will also extend usable wall space without blocking entrance space in your hallway.

You could create a Scandi-style modular shelving system if your hallway width allows it. Alternatively, opt for layers of floating shelves at different heights to display photos, books, post and plants.

This is an opportunity to brighten up your hallway area with items that reflect your personality and make guests feel welcome as soon as they step into your home.

Install a shoe storage bench

Storage benches provide a comfortable space to sit and remove shoes, decompress on arrival, or pop your shopping down. At the same time, they offer added storage under the seat, which is great for housing any items you want to keep out of view.

These benches come in many shapes and sizes, from large, plush velvet ottomans to small leather cubes. If you choose the colours and fabrics wisely, storage benches can work well to soften the space as you enter, making it homelier and more welcoming.

Use a console table

Console tables are ideal for hallways due to their slim profile. Although slender, most console tables come with drawers that are very useful for holding small items that often get misplaced, including keys, wallets and phones.

The top of console tables can be used to place table lamps for added entrance lighting, as well as fresh flowers, diffusers and hand lotions.

Bonus hallway storage ideas

Hallway storage ideas don’t always have to be conventional. Quirky shoe storage ideas include repurposed step ladders draped against walls with every rung used for displaying footwear, or drawers fitted within each individual step of a staircase as you walk up.

Other alternative ideas for hallway storage include letter baskets and pigeon holes for your post and wall mounts for bikes and scooters, if these are your preferred modes of transport!
